Today, it’s time for something fun and adorable. I present you with my version of a Minnie Mouse cupcake. Super simple to make with homemade cupcakes or a box mix and will please any Minnie lover in your life.
I created these for my daughter’s 2nd birthday and she absolutely loved them! I’m not artistic or good at decorating so I always try to do the most simple designs when doing my kids birthday cakes and cupcakes. I was so happy with how these turned out that I had to create a post for them.
Here I’ve made my easy chocolate cupcakes and topped them with my fresh strawberry buttercream so that I didn’t need to use any food colouring. Whether you’re against it or not, I hate putting it in young kids desserts because it stains! I then created the adorable bow with this mold and topped it with mini Oreos, so simple!

What Flavour Cupcake?
You can use any flavour you like and a box mix will also work perfectly with this. I’ve used my easy chocolate cupcake recipe but my easy vanilla cupcakes would also be delicious!
What Flavour Frosting?
I used my fresh strawberry buttercream as my kids love strawberries but also because then I didn’t need food colouring. You can also just make vanilla buttercream and do a different colour bow or add enough red food colouring to get the pink hue you want. I recommend a gel food colouring as it’s less mess and cheaper in the long run as you’ll only need a couple drops!

How to Make the Bows
These are actually super easy using this bow mold. I used the medium sized one and I just melted white chocolate and added it into the mold. I like to use a small paintbrush so I make sure it gets in all the nooks and crannies. It’s also easy to pop air bubbles with. (If you would like a different colour bow, then get a coloured candy melt or wafer instead of white chocolate and follow these same steps.)
Then, tap the mold on the counter a few times to bring anymore air bubble to the surface and use your paint brush to pop them. Put the mold in the fridge for 10 minutes and then just pop the bows out. Repeat this until you have enough.
Store the bows in the fridge in a container until you’re ready to use them so they don’t get dirty or start to melt and smudge.
Creating the Ears
This is also very easy using mini Oreos. I just twisted them into two pieces and using a butter knife, scraped off the filling. This is optional though as the filling will be on the back of the ear anyways.
Then put each half, I did the design side out, on top of your frosting with enough space in between to lay your bow. See the pictures for a better idea.

Making Mickey Cupcakes
If you want to make just Mickey cupcakes or both Minnie and Mickey, then skip the bow on the Mickey cupcakes. You could use a white frosting or split the strawberry frosting in half, leave half the frosting the natural pink colour and add red food colouring to the other half to get a red colour for Mickey. Place the ears in the same way and you could also you white chocolate wafers as buttons.
Baking Tips
- Using a naturally red or pink frosting negates the need for food colouring.
- Using a bow mold is the easiest way to create the bows.
- Mini Oreos make the best ears, regular sized Oreos can work but they’ll be pretty big compared to the cupcake and bow.
- I create my recipes based off weights so I recommend measuring by weights if you own a scale. It’s actually so much easier and makes for much less cleanup. I wish I had baked by weight from the beginning, I could never go back now.

More Birthday Recipes
Today’s song is a super fun song to dance around the kitchen too while decorating and baking these. Here’s Coco Jamboo by Mr. President. Happy Baking! **Disclaimer: Liv’s Little Muffins owns no rights to this song.

Minnie Mouse Cupcakes
Ingredients
Cupcakes
- 1 batch Easy Chocolate Cupcakes OR
- 1 batch Easy Vanilla Cupcakes OR
- any other recipe or box mix you like
Frosting
- 1 batch Fresh Strawberry Buttercream OR
- Any other frosting you like
- red gel food colouring (optional)
Decoration
- 12 mini Oreos
- Bow mold (I used the medium sized bow from this set)
- 1 cup white chocolate chips (or coloured melting wafer)
- 12 polka dot cupcake liners (optional)
Instructions
- Make your cupcakes according to the instructions and allow to fully cool. Keep in mind, if you're using a box mix, they typically make 24 cupcakes, not 12. You'll need 1 mini Oreo and 1 bow per cupcake.
- While your cupcakes cool, make your frosting according to the directions. (*See notes regarding food colouring) Add the frosting into a piping bag with the piping tip you like. I used a 1M tip. Set aside.
- To make the bows, add your white chocolate or melting wafers to a microwave safe dish. Heat in 20 second increments in the microwave, stirring in between.
- Then using a small spoon, add the white chocolate to the bow mold so it goes to the top of the mold. Using a toothpick or small paintbrush, pop any air bubbles. Tap the mold on the counter a few times to ensure the chocolate gets in all the crevices and pop any more air bubbles that surface.
- Put the mold in the fridge for 15 minutes or until the chocolate is fully set. Then pop the bows out and put them in a clean dish and store in the fridge until you need them. Repeat this until you have 12 bows, or more if you need more.
- Take 12 mini Oreos and twist them apart. Using a butter knife, scrape off the filling. Set these aside.
- Once the cupcakes are cooled, pipe large swirls on top like in the pictures above. Then add half of an oreo on the left top side and right top side. Make your you leave enough space for the bow to fit between. Then add the bow in front of the ears so it just partially covers them, like in the pictures above. Repeat this 11 more times and that's it. Store in an airtight container until you're ready to eat and enjoy!
