Healthy Chocolate Banana Brownies

Today I’ve the got the perfect healthy treat. My healthy chocolate banana brownies are packed with goodness but still fudgy and decadent. Simple to whip up, these bad boys can be ready to eat in less than an hour!

I love eating desserts but sometimes I like to have a healthier option in the freezer or on the counter if I’ve already had a not great day of eating but want something sweet. These brownies are the perfect option for those days. Lately, I haven’t wanted a lot of sweet stuff anyways due to pregnancy nausea but these have been hitting the spot! I fully intend to whip up a couple batches of these and put them in the freezer for some healthier late night breastfeeding snacks!

These brownies are also a great snack or treat to give to your kiddos. My kids love these and just tonight while eating a piece, she grabbed her own spoon and came over and asked if she could :have some pieces”. She’s only 2 so she didn’t wait for an answer and dug in haha. So safe to say, these are also kid approved!

For some other healthy treat options, check out my chocolate almond banana muffins, which are also gluten free, or my double chocolate zucchini bread made with whole grains.

Ideally, you want some brown spots on the bananas. The more ripe they are, the easier they are to mash and incorporate into the other ingredients. They also add a lot more flavour when they’re overripe.

As bananas typically vary in size so much, for this brownies, I recommend measuring by weight to get the perfect texture. If you don’t own a scale, then measure your mashed banana in cups as I’ve written in the recipe card.

For these chocolate banana brownies and most baking recipes, you want a fine ground almond flour. This is different then almond meal which is made from ground unpeeled almonds. Fine ground almond flour is made from blanched almonds and will be a much finer texture. If you don’t want to spend too much money, Costco’s big bag of almond flour is what I use and it is generally much cheaper.

Yes! These are made with almond flour so they’re naturally gluten free.

As a side note, if making anything gluten free for someone with an allergy, ensure you thoroughly wash any equipment, jars or utensils. Any contact with flour may trigger an allergy. I like to say any baking I do in my own home is gluten friendly as I am using flour often and cannot guarantee there’s been no cross contamination.

If you’d like a different kind of gluten free treat that’s less healthy, try my double chocolate almond flour cookies or my fudgy coconut flour brownies.

While I prefer the look of glass, it’s really not ideal for baking. Glass takes much longer to heat which can leave you with an overbaked brownie making it more cakey than fudgy. Metal pans heat much more evenly and will give you the perfect texture.

If you want to freeze these, follow these steps:

  1. Fully cool the brownies and then slice into pieces.
  2. Place a paper towel on the bottom of an airtight container or bag.
  3. Put the pieces on top of the paper towel in a single layer. If you need to layer them, put a small square of paper towel between the layers.
  4. Seal and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  5. To eat, take amount you need out and let thaw at room temperature for 2 hours or heat in the microwave in 20 second increments. But be cautious if using the microwave when feeding children or toddlers, it can leave hot spots. You can also just eat them straight out of the freezer if you prefer!
  • For best results, use room temperature ingredients! They will mix together much easier creating a smoother, more well incorporated batter.
  • For the best banana flavour, use overripe bananas.
  • Make sure are using a fine ground almond flour and not an almond meal.
  • I create my recipes based off weights so I recommend measuring by weights if you own a scale. It’s actually so much easier and makes for much less cleanup. I wish I had baked by weight from the beginning, I could never go back now.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (220g) mashed overripe banana
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup (80g) maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (55g) smooth peanut butter (not natural)
  • 3/4 cup (75g) almond flour
  • 1/2 cup (50g) cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (80g) semi sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉ and spray or line an 8×8 pan (preferably metal).
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the mashed banana (or just mash the banana right in the bowl), eggs and maple syrup. Whisk vigorously for 30 seconds.
  • Add in vanilla and peanut butter and whisk until combined. Add in the almond flour and cocoa powder and whisk until combined. Add the chocolate chips and whisk again to combine.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly using a spatula. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until the centre is just set. A toothpick inserted in the centre should have some moist crumbs stuck to it. Don't overbake or you'll lose the fudgy texture.
  • Allow to fully cool and store in an airtight container for up to 4 days and enjoy!
